Swish Patterns – One Of The 7 NLP Techniques To Transform Your Life

In this series, I will talk about a few NLP techniques and principles that can help you change almost any aspect of your personality. With these you will be able to take control of your life. Let’s start with one of the most common ones – The Swish pattern.

1. The Swish Pattern

The Swish Pattern is one of the most popular NLP techniques. It has lots of uses.

It can be used to break an automatic thought or behavioral pattern and replace it with a resourceful one.

Some of the common uses of the swish pattern are:

  • Breaking any bad habit (eg: smoking, overeating)
  • Management of emotions (eg: Anger management)
  • Improving public speaking
  • Reducing nervousness
  • Developing self-confidence and self-esteem
  • Managing state

The Swish Pattern – Breakdown of the steps

Step #1. Recognize the automatic reaction: Recognize the reaction pattern (the thoughts, feelings or images that comes to you when you think of any situation that you want to change). Select a replacement image (something inspiring, such as a really good outcome), that helps create a positive state. Imagine yourself in a dissociated image (the third perceptual position, as if you are watching yourself in a movie). Enhance the qualities, such as submodalities, of the scene until it is as compelling as possible.

Step #2. Determine the trigger of the negative image: Discover what tells your mind to produce the negative image or behavior. Ask yourself what occurs just before this negative or unwanted state begins? This time, you want an associated scene (first position, looking through your own eyes) of what is going on immediately before you engage in the unwanted activity. Remember to think in terms of submodalities to get a detailed sense of the scene. It functions as a trigger for the unresourceful state.

Step #3. Place the replacement: Put the replacement off in the corner of the negative image. Imagine a small, postagestamp- sized version of your replacement scene in the bottom corner of the negative scene.

Step #4. Swish the two images: Swish the two images. You will be making both images change simultaneously and with increasing speed. (If you are experienced, you can select two critical submodalities for this). When you swish, have the negative scene become smaller and shoot off into the distance. At the same time, have the positive replacement image zip in closer and larger, rapidly and completely replacing the negative scene. Imagine it making a whoosh sound as it zips into place. At first, you’ll probably do this slowly, taking a few seconds to complete the swish. As you repeat the process, you will be able to do it faster and faster, until you swish nearly instantaneously.

Step #5. Repeat: Clear your mind after each Swish. This is very important. Do this by thinking of something else, such as your favorite color or what you need to do later. Remember to breathe easily during the swish and the breaks. Do the swish five to seven times, repeating steps three to five each time. You know you have a good outcome when you have some difficulty maintaining the negative image.

Step #6. Test: Now try to use the limiting thought or behavior again. Notice how hard, if not impossible, it is for you to act it out. Notice that you actually have to think about how to do it first; it is not as automatic as it used to be. If you feel that you could relapse, use the Swish again in a day or two, and again after a week.

Additional Advice on the Swish pattern

You can also Swish the two images by using other submodalities instead of the ones used here. You could Swish a full color image with a black & white one; you could Swish by going from 3D to Flat or vice versa; you could Swish a snapshot with a movie or any other contradicting submodalities.

The main key here is to explore and investigate the options.

Some people will respond immediately to the Size/Location forms of Swish, and it is known that these are driver submodalities. But others may differ, so keep an open minded, and if the Swish pattern by-the-book does not produce the results you seek, experiment with other driver submodalities. Focus on the task at hand and suspend all other thoughts. This takes a little practice. But the rewards can be great and life changing. One way to start practicing this is to imagine a red traffic light or a big red stop sign every time you catch yourself thinking negatively about the past or the future. Immediately take a deep breath, and think of where you actually are now and bring the focus back to what you are doing. Initially, this exercise may feel like a pain to do and the instances where you catch yourself may be few. But stick with it – do it mechanically, just like a physical exercise, without any expectation of results. The reason is that, any expectation of results can again trigger worries and anxiety. Before you know, this exercise will become second nature and you will start doing this unconsciously. When this happens, you will have set up an automatic system to handle anxiety effectively.

Tackling anxiety takes a comprehensive approach. While the method I mentioned earlier will help you eliminate anxiety over a period of time and give you long-term benefits, if you experience high anxiety levels consistently, it is essential that you approach a competent medical practitioner immediately. Don’t hesitate to talk to your doctor. Treat this simply as another medical issue, like maybe a headache or fever, and take the help of an expert. Doctors can prescribe medications to bring your anxiety levels down immediately. This also gives you enough time to work out a long – term strategy to tackle this issue. If you have already been going to a doctor, and it is not helping, consider approaching a different one immediately. Medical advice, along with lifestyle changes like exercising more and changing your diet can make a huge difference in your life.

Another factor that can play a big role is your physiology. Your physiology is deeply connected to your psychology. When you sit somewhere brooding, your shoulders slumped, your breath shallow and your eyes looking down, you are signaling to your mind that you are feeling anxious or depressed and your mind will reciprocate by flooding you with worries and negative thoughts and memories.

The moment you notice that you are becoming a little anxious in any situation, change your physiology – sit or stand straight, look up, breath deeply and if possible, distract yourself by thinking of something funny. If the situation allows, smile a big goofy smile. If you are doing something, focus on the job and act “as if” you are absolutely confident. Send powerful physiological signals to your brain that you are in charge of the situation and are ready to act decisively.

Learn meditation or join a yoga group (if possible with your friends).Yoga and meditation can help release negative thoughts and emotions, thereby clearing your mind and helping you focus on the positive. Other physical activities like working out regularly at a gym can also help you in gaining positive energy and reducing anxiety.

Laughter, as they say, is the best medicine. Practice smiling more and laughing deeply. Create a list of all the good things in your life – no matter how small. Write it all down. The mental activity of identifying all the good things and the physical activity of writing will immediately force your mind to focus on the positive. If done daily, you will see a dramatic reduction in the level of anxiety that you experience in your life.

A major factor that can contribute to high levels of anxiety is daily stress. By learning to manage/ reduce daily stress, you can easily gain more control over your overall level of anxiety. Start by looking at small things in your environment that you can tackle first. Learn to delegate tasks – both at work and at home. Trust in others’ ability to handle these tasks. After several studies, the developers of NLP started zoning into communication to see how successful people communicated in terms of body language, verbal language and eye movement amongst others.

 

Through taking careful note it was noticed that there were specific patterns of thinking that got the individual to be successful. On further investigation it was theorized that our brain can pick up behaviours and healthy patterns to help bring about positive emotional and physical effects. These studies, along with a number of other techniques developed by Bandler, Grinder and a number of other researchers came to be known as Neuro Linguistic Programming or NLP.

Do you struggle with self-doubt? Perhaps you often wonder if you’ve made the right decision or have only a faint hope that your next job interview, project, or even date will turn out well. The most unfortunate thing about self-doubt is that your fears often become self-fulfilling prophecies.

On the other hand, when you take action to become more confident in yourself, more things in your life automatically turn out better as well. With more self-confidence, your decision-making skills are strengthened, others are drawn to you in social situations, you produce higher quality work, and you’re more able to create the life you desire.

Try these strategies to silence the inner critic inside of you and regain your confidence:

  1. Stop and think. Reflect on why you’re experiencing feelings of doubt. Think about the events that caused you to feel insecure. Being faced with a challenge that you don’t feel you’re capable of successfully completing is a major cause for self-doubt.
  • Do you have a habit of putting yourself down? You may be subconsciously repeating negative thoughts that prevent you from moving forward. Such thoughts as “I can’t do this” and “I’m not good enough” become reasons to opt out of new experiences that could bring you many benefits.
  • The next time you have a self-doubting thought, take a few moments to think about why you believe this is true. If insecurities are getting the better of you because of past failures, you must resolve to live in the moment. Today is a new day!
  • Replace your negative self-talk with positive thoughts about how you can do it and you are good enough. Make the switch each and every time you have a self-doubting thought. Soon you’ll automatically be singing your praises instead of your doubts.

 

  1. Practice self-understanding. Often, when you feel insecure about your abilities, you start berating yourself. Beating yourself up over something you feel you did wrong only leads to a cycle of frustration and procrastination. Realize that making mistakes doesn’t make you a bad or incompetent person – it simply makes you human.
  • Allow yourself to accept that while you’re not perfect, you’re certainly someone who always strives to do the very best job you can. Embrace the idea that every challenge in life is an opportunity for you to learn something new and grow as a person. 
  1. Make a list. Take a blank sheet of paper and make two columns. On the left side, write down all of those doubtful thoughts you’re having about yourself right now. On the right side, list all of the positive facts that dispute your doubts.
  • For example, suppose you’ve been assigned a new task at work that you’ve never done before, and you immediately become negative because you feel your skills aren’t adequate. On the left side of the list write “I can’t do this because I don’t have the skills.” On the right side of the page write “I was given this task because I’m a quick learner who always gets the job done.”
  • You’ll find that you have a lot more positive facts listed than doubts. If your positive list is short, keep searching through your talents and good qualities (yes – they are there) until your positive list outweighs your negative one.

 

  1. Write a letter. Write a letter to yourself that talks about your positive traits and how you’ve overcome obstacles in the past. If you can recall a specific time when you triumphed over self-doubt and accomplished something that makes you feel proud, tell this to yourself in the form of a story.
  • The act of writing the letter will release all of those pent up insecurities that are spinning around inside of your mind. By the end of the letter, you should be feeling a lot better. Keep the letter in a brightly colored folder, so you can refer back to it when needed.

 

  1. Make an appreciation folder. Keep track of those kind words of appreciation you receive from others. When you’re experiencing self-doubt, it’s easy to forget about all of those wonderful comments you’ve received for doing things that made other people’s lives better in some way. Collect all of the emails, notes and cards that say kind and loving things about you.
  • When you feel the voice of your inner critic welling up inside of you, simply take out your appreciation folder and read those wonderful thoughts.

 

Self-doubt can rob you of the opportunity to reach new heights of success in life. While it’s very common to doubt yourself once in a while, you want to be able to easily let go of your inner critic when it pops up. Practicing the steps above will enable you to push through your self-doubt, boost your confidence, and clear the way for positive new experiences.
