Swish Patterns – One Of The 7 NLP Techniques To Transform Your Life

Swish Patterns – One Of The 7 NLP Techniques To Transform Your Life

In this series, I will talk about a few NLP techniques and principles that can help you change almost any aspect of your personality. With these you will be able to take control of your life. Let’s start with one of the most common ones – The Swish pattern.

1. The Swish Pattern

The Swish Pattern is one of the most popular NLP techniques. It has lots of uses.

It can be used to break an automatic thought or behavioral pattern and replace it with a resourceful one.

Some of the common uses of the swish pattern are:

  • Breaking any bad habit (eg: smoking, overeating)
  • Management of emotions (eg: Anger management)
  • Improving public speaking
  • Reducing nervousness
  • Developing self-confidence and self-esteem
  • Managing state

The Swish Pattern – Breakdown of the steps

Step #1. Recognize the automatic reaction: Recognize the reaction pattern (the thoughts, feelings or images that comes to you when you think of any situation that you want to change). Select a replacement image (something inspiring, such as a really good outcome), that helps create a positive state. Imagine yourself in a dissociated image (the third perceptual position, as if you are watching yourself in a movie). Enhance the qualities, such as submodalities, of the scene until it is as compelling as possible.

Step #2. Determine the trigger of the negative image: Discover what tells your mind to produce the negative image or behavior. Ask yourself what occurs just before this negative or unwanted state begins? This time, you want an associated scene (first position, looking through your own eyes) of what is going on immediately before you engage in the unwanted activity. Remember to think in terms of submodalities to get a detailed sense of the scene. It functions as a trigger for the unresourceful state.

Step #3. Place the replacement: Put the replacement off in the corner of the negative image. Imagine a small, postagestamp- sized version of your replacement scene in the bottom corner of the negative scene.

Step #4. Swish the two images: Swish the two images. You will be making both images change simultaneously and with increasing speed. (If you are experienced, you can select two critical submodalities for this). When you swish, have the negative scene become smaller and shoot off into the distance. At the same time, have the positive replacement image zip in closer and larger, rapidly and completely replacing the negative scene. Imagine it making a whoosh sound as it zips into place. At first, you’ll probably do this slowly, taking a few seconds to complete the swish. As you repeat the process, you will be able to do it faster and faster, until you swish nearly instantaneously.

Step #5. Repeat: Clear your mind after each Swish. This is very important. Do this by thinking of something else, such as your favorite color or what you need to do later. Remember to breathe easily during the swish and the breaks. Do the swish five to seven times, repeating steps three to five each time. You know you have a good outcome when you have some difficulty maintaining the negative image.

Step #6. Test: Now try to use the limiting thought or behavior again. Notice how hard, if not impossible, it is for you to act it out. Notice that you actually have to think about how to do it first; it is not as automatic as it used to be. If you feel that you could relapse, use the Swish again in a day or two, and again after a week.

Additional Advice on the Swish pattern

You can also Swish the two images by using other submodalities instead of the ones used here. You could Swish a full color image with a black & white one; you could Swish by going from 3D to Flat or vice versa; you could Swish a snapshot with a movie or any other contradicting submodalities.

The main key here is to explore and investigate the options.

Some people will respond immediately to the Size/Location forms of Swish, and it is known that these are driver submodalities. But others may differ, so keep an open minded, and if the Swish pattern by-the-book does not produce the results you seek, experiment with other driver submodalities. Here is what other NLP trainers had to say about the Swish pattern in the book – NLP – The New Technology Of Achievement by NLP Comprehensive, Steve Andreas and Charles Faulkner: “The Swish pattern is a very

simple and effective way to create an objective and favorable image of yourself that produces immediate results in specific troublesome situations … you won’t know ahead of time exactly what you will do the next time you encounter a situation that is similar to one that used to be troublesome”.

Reclaim your Life – Tips To Manage Anxiety

Reclaim your Life – Tips To Manage Anxiety

Everybody has to deal with some anxiety and stress in his/ her life. What makes some people more successful and able to lead a more balanced life is their ability to manage anxiety. It is the strategy that they use to cope – consciously or unconsciously, that makes a big difference.

Anxiety can take a toll on your life if you do not recognize the symptoms and immediately take steps to gain control back. Fortunately, there are steps you can take to reduce anxiety. This article will look at a few of those methods. Once you start using them on a consistent basis, you will see that you can take charge and effectively manage the level of anxiety in your life.

The first step is to identify the triggers. Once you learn what triggers your anxiety, you will be better equipped to control it. For many people, workplace stress plays a key role in triggering high levels of anxiety in their everyday lives. If that is the case for you, immediately discuss this issue with your manager. The more you keep this bottled up, the more damage it will do to your system.

Learn to stay focused on the present. Remember that your past is nothing but stored memories. Your past is never equal to your future. You may have failed once or a hundred times. This does not mean that you will fail in the future. All you have to do is to do things differently from the past and you will get a new result. Similarly, the future is nothing but your imagination of how something may happen. Your imagination is just that – your imagination, nothing more. It is not real. So finally all you really have is the present and believe me, that’s all you need to take control of your life.

Focus on the present and the future will take care of itself. Obsessing over your past problems or fears about your future is nothing but a waste of time and vital energy. All it does is to overwhelm you, cause worry, and trigger anxiety attacks.

Focus on the task at hand and suspend all other thoughts. This takes a little practice. But the rewards can be great and life changing. One way to start practicing this is to imagine a red traffic light or a big red stop sign every time you catch yourself thinking negatively about the past or the future. Immediately take a deep breath, and think of where you actually are now and bring the focus back to what you are doing. Initially, this exercise may feel like a pain to do and the instances where you catch yourself may be few. But stick with it – do it mechanically, just like a physical exercise, without any expectation of results. The reason is that, any expectation of results can again trigger worries and anxiety. Before you know, this exercise will become second nature and you will start doing this unconsciously. When this happens, you will have set up an automatic system to handle anxiety effectively.

Tackling anxiety takes a comprehensive approach. While the method I mentioned earlier will help you eliminate anxiety over a period of time and give you long-term benefits, if you experience high anxiety levels consistently, it is essential that you approach a competent medical practitioner immediately. Don’t hesitate to talk to your doctor. Treat this simply as another medical issue, like maybe a headache or fever, and take the help of an expert. Doctors can prescribe medications to bring your anxiety levels down immediately. This also gives you enough time to work out a long – term strategy to tackle this issue. If you have already been going to a doctor, and it is not helping, consider approaching a different one immediately. Medical advice, along with lifestyle changes like exercising more and changing your diet can make a huge difference in your life.

Another factor that can play a big role is your physiology. Your physiology is deeply connected to your psychology. When you sit somewhere brooding, your shoulders slumped, your breath shallow and your eyes looking down, you are signaling to your mind that you are feeling anxious or depressed and your mind will reciprocate by flooding you with worries and negative thoughts and memories.

The moment you notice that you are becoming a little anxious in any situation, change your physiology – sit or stand straight, look up, breath deeply and if possible, distract yourself by thinking of something funny. If the situation allows, smile a big goofy smile. If you are doing something, focus on the job and act “as if” you are absolutely confident. Send powerful physiological signals to your brain that you are in charge of the situation and are ready to act decisively.

Learn meditation or join a yoga group (if possible with your friends).Yoga and meditation can help release negative thoughts and emotions, thereby clearing your mind and helping you focus on the positive. Other physical activities like working out regularly at a gym can also help you in gaining positive energy and reducing anxiety.

Laughter, as they say, is the best medicine. Practice smiling more and laughing deeply. Create a list of all the good things in your life – no matter how small. Write it all down. The mental activity of identifying all the good things and the physical activity of writing will immediately force your mind to focus on the positive. If done daily, you will see a dramatic reduction in the level of anxiety that you experience in your life.

A major factor that can contribute to high levels of anxiety is daily stress. By learning to manage/ reduce daily stress, you can easily gain more control over your overall level of anxiety. Start by looking at small things in your environment that you can tackle first. Learn to delegate tasks – both at work and at home. Trust in others’ ability to handle these tasks. Initially, it may seem like a big risk to let go of all that control. But once you get the hang of it, you will begin to enjoy life a lot more. Try to find some time to relax and unwind every day.

Try not to keep any bills pending as these can lead to a lot of anxiety later. Late payments tend to increase stress levels. Make sure that you pay every bill on time. Then sit back and relax.

A powerful tool that can help you in reducing anxiety, both in the short term and long term, is hypnosis. You could either approach a competent therapist or you could learn self hypnosis depending on your specific situation. There are also downloadable hypnosis programs available on the internet that can help you deal with anxiety. Regular use of these, combined with the points mentioned above can help you get rid of anxiety and lead a fulfilling and successful life.

Lose Weight Today By Doing Things You Enjoy

Lose Weight Today By Doing Things You Enjoy

Struggling to lose weight can be quite stressful if you are not seeing any results and are unsure on where to really begin. If you have finally made the commitment to lose weight, then this article is for you. Everyone needs a starting point, after all. Successful dieting is built upon the notion that you must learn as much as possible about eating and working out, and on your ability to use that information. Here are a few guidelines to help you start now and see results soon.

Before going to the supermarket, check the store’s online ad. Doing this will enable you to determine which stores have the lowest prices for lean meat, vegetables and fruit. Keep track of what stores have the best prices on the items you need and then shop accordingly.

The scale is not always your best friend. Constantly weighing yourself is a good way to set yourself up for negative feelings. Exercise will increase your muscles mass which has more weight than just fat mass. Gauge your progress on how your clothes fit.

It’s one thing to repeatedly talk about losing weight, but it’s more important to actually take action and do it. Start today and continue moving forward. You will wonder why you waited so long to get started.

One great way to lose weight is by finding a physical activity you enjoy and continuing to do it. Activities help you to take off more calories, so that you can reach your ultimate goal. When you love the activity you’re doing, it will be easier for you to stay motivated.

Household cleaning chores are good ways to burn off excess calories and help maintain a healthy body weight. Housecleaning has a side benefit of using up extra calories, giving you a nice little workout in addition to your clean house. Listening to music on your iPod or radio while you work can provide added benefits, as you might just feel the urge to dance as you clean. This will help you to burn even more calories.

Skipping a meal actually causes your body to hold on to weight, as it slows your metabolism. If you must miss a regular meal for some reason, have a healthy, substantial snack. Eating some nuts or an apple is better than not eating anything.

It is crucial to avoid your trigger foods. You will have to tweak your environment in order for this to be possible. You must maximize avoidance with trigger foods anywhere you are. If you can get them, you will eat them.

A great dieting tip is to use a smaller, child-sized plate to eat your meals on. It is not uncommon for people to fill a plate with food. If you use larger plates but reduce portion sizes, your brain is going to know better. Using a smaller plate can help you to eat less without you even realizing it.

To lose weight, eat lean meat, and prepare it in a healthy manner. To keep the calories low, try a chutney or salsa instead of rich, calorie-rich sauces. This can make even dry, tasteless meat seem juicy and tasty. Chutneys come in many varieties that add wonderful flavours to your protein choice.

Do not dress in loose clothing if you would like to lose weight. Overweight people often wear clothing that is lose or baggy in the interests of comfort. This also makes it less likely that they will think about their weight. If you drop the loose clothing for something a little more close-cut, you will be more conscious of the weight.

Make sure to stay focused on the positive efforts you can make for weight loss, not the negatives. For instance, you should start telling yourself that if you resist the temptation of eating dessert tonight, you can lose two pounds this week. If you continue to say this to yourself, it can hopefully help turn your dreams into reality.

Use smaller dishes to make weight loss easier. It’s common to use every inch on our plates, and dishes have gotten bigger in recent years, causing portions sizes to grow accordingly. Using smaller plates, a moderate-sized salad plate for example, will really help you lose weight.

For those who eat an afternoon snack of nuts, choose nuts that come packed in their shell. This is because you will take longer to eat them and it will make you eat less.

To boost your chances for a healthy and successful weight loss, learn all about the type of foods that belong in the MUFA group. MUFA is an acronym for “monounsaturated fatty acids” and many types of nuts, oils, and butters are counted as MUFA foods. MUFA foods have been shown to not only help you lose weight, but to give you significant health benefits, as well. Aim to include MUFA foods in your current diet.

Hopefully, the weight-loss process feels a little less stressful now that you’ve reviewed a few ideas for getting fit and shedding pounds. The next step is to implement the techniques you have learned. To reiterate, achieving your weight loss goals may be easier than you think if you tackle them with determination.

Self Improvement Tips

Self Improvement Tips

You can often learn a great deal about yourself from other people. Teachers, professionals and even friends can help you analyze what your thoughts and encourage you to express your feelings.

Self improvement should begin with your health. Exercising and eating nutritious foods are core to a healthy lifestyle, but you also need to be able to stick with your regimen. When your health is an important aspect of your lifestyle, it will lead to general overall well being and will help you feel good about yourself in every area of your life.

Embrace challenges. Trying new things makes doors open up for you. Always think about learning something new or acquiring new skills. You could end up creating something new or doing something no one else has done. Don’t just copy what others have done, find something original.

Avoid pushing yourself too far, especially in terms of physical limitations. While exerting your best effort is admirable, recognize when you have reached your limit. Even when you are working towards your goals, your body should come first. Short-changing your body in order to meet personal development goals is a terribly counter-productive form of self-improvement.

Keep in mind that everyday should be better than the previous one. Push yourself to pursue every opportunity for improvement. Encourage yourself to top yesterday’s accomplishments and set the stage for tomorrow’s successes.

Ask others about their achievements instead of boasting about your own. You will be amazed to hear some of the wonderful and interesting things the people around you have done in their lives, and you will earn new respect for them by understanding their true character.

Always aspire to do your best at everything you do. You should always try to be the best you can be. You can never be as good as you could be at one single thing but you can try to be the best you can be in what you are interested in. By increasing your value within your field of study or work, you can enjoy benefits including higher self-esteem.

Start giving other people compliments. Fighting this trend and complimenting others changes your mindset and makes you a kinder person.

Incorporate your belief system into daily living. Everyone has certain beliefs that reinforce their sense of self at the core. When your core beliefs are well-founded, your self esteem improves. This practice will encourage consistency, a valuable character trait to keep.

If you notice yourself struggling with the blues, try increasing the amount of complex carbs in your diet. A lack of complex carbs can lead to a shortage of serotonin, a significant factor in depression. Aside from snacking on nuts, rice and legumes, exercising and getting enough sleep also help boost serotonin levels.

Remove the disorganization from all aspects of your life. Bringing structure to your life will give you a great sense of accomplishment, and living a more organized life will boost your confidence. Additionally, your life will be less stressful because you no longer have to deal with disorganization. Having everything in its rightful place will give you a sense of calm and ease.

One of the most common obstacles to personal development is a failure to set reasonable and specific goals. Make sure to come up with a target goal for yourself. When you have specific goals set, you will find that you get results.

Try and surround yourself with people who think like you do. Like-minded people will help strengthen your resolve while reinforcing positive attitudes.

Figure out what you want your life to be and do what it takes to accomplish it. Just sitting around doing nothing to make the life you want actually happen will get you nowhere. Do something about your dreams and you will see them come true.

Leaders are powerful, yet not hungry for power. If you talk about weaknesses or problems that you see in others, be kind while doing it. Do not forget that being a good leader means that you must also know how and when to follow others. A good leader is virtuous and full of integrity, something you need in order to be successful.

It is important to know yourself and accept who you are as a person. Accept who you are and do not lie to yourself. This should help you make friends with yourself and live a fulfilling life.

Self Improvement with NLP

There are many ways to initiate self improvement. Often times the words we use on a daily basis reflects our inner, subconscious perception of the problems at hand. This is what NLP (Neuro Linguistic Programming) is all about. As long as we keep on programming our thoughts to ponder over these problems, the underlying problem will never go away.

What is NLP ?

NLP can be broken down into three parts so that we get to have a better understanding of how it works.

Neuro as the first part has to do with our brain as well as the neural network connecting out brain and nervous system. It looks at how information is received, processed and stored by our nervous system.

How we communicate with our own mind and also with others make up the linguistic part of the NLP. This includes both verbal and non-verbal communication.

Programming has to do with the way the information is manipulated by our mind. Based on our prior experience or our mental filters, the mind may sequence the information in a particular fashion or even change it to match our existing perceptions of the world.

NLP was developed in the early seventies by Richard Bandler and John Grinder. What got the developers of NLP interested were the varying results achieved by people with the same background and training. They got curious as to what made certain people more effective than others, and were looking for ways to duplicate this behaviour.

After several studies, the developers of NLP started zoning into communication to see how successful people communicated in terms of body language, verbal language and eye movement amongst others.

Through taking careful note it was noticed that there were specific patterns of thinking that got the individual to be successful. On further investigation it was theorized that our brain can pick up behaviours and healthy patterns to help bring about positive emotional and physical effects. These studies, along with a number of other techniques developed by Bandler, Grinder and a number of other researchers came to be known as Neuro Linguistic Programming or NLP.

How Can NLP Help You ?

NLP comes with a broad range of tools and techniques gained from various disciplines used to help understand the functions of our brain. These can help people improve a number of aspects of their life including improving self confidence and self esteem, overcoming phobias, improving learning skills, overcoming public speaking fears…etc.

In short, NLP is a powerful self improvement approach that can help people take charge of their own life.

Steps To Help You Build Self Confidence

Steps To Help You Build Self Confidence

What Can You Do To Build Self Confidence

Everyone deserves love and respect and building self confidence will go a long way in getting the recognition you deserve. Famous people are strong believers in doing what you can in everyday life to help you build self confidence. Helen Keller once said that you should never bend your head, but always hold it high and look the world straight in the face. Brian Tracy said it well by saying “Whatever we expect with confidence becomes our own self-fulfilling prophecy.”

In building your self confidence, you need to take steps that will help you build your inner strength and become more assertive in your dealing with others. This takes time and patience and is not an overnight thing.

Steps To Help You Build Self Confidence

They say one of the first steps in helping your sort out problems is to take stock of what is wrong. The same is true when you lack confidence. Recognizing what is holding you back from being confident is the first step to building self confidence.

What makes that you feel out of place in front of others. Is it your acne, negative experiences in the past such as getting bullied, being fat or having to deal with unmanageable hair. You need to identify it and write it down.

Once you have a checklist of what is leading to the lack of self confidence, you need to get to the root of the problem which may even mean that you have to face your fears head on. Once you have taken it upon yourself to start dealing with your fears or problems, you will see a definite improvement and may even experience incidences where you start becoming more assertive.

According to Thomas A. Bennett if you decide you are going to tackle a certain task and do your best to complete it successfully, you will build self confidence as the sense of accomplishment is immense.

Take Action To Build Self Confidence

One of the most important steps in building your self confidence is in taking action. Do not sit and top about something and over think it. This way you will never get yourself in doing something you have a fear of doing. Follow Nike’s philosophy on things and “Just Do It”

By being present in your thinking and going around doing things that needs to be done is one of the best ways to build self confidence. Another way to get to do things you normally wouldn’t is to relax and lighten up as you will get to realize it is not such a big problem as you initially thought. Once you managed to achieve this state of mind through things like self hypnosis nothing will seem to much for you to do.

What might make you even more confident is the realization that people are busy with their own life and do not really care about what you do or not do. In other words, the world doesn’t revolve around what you are doing or not. This is quite a sobering thought and might help you a lot more in your quest to build self confidence.

The Secrets to the Law of Attraction

The Secrets to the Law of Attraction

What Is The Law Of Attraction ?

According to some teachers and philosophers, the law of attraction has existed since the beginning of time. Most people may not even be aware that it exists. Apparently law of attraction gets you to attract what you want and also what you don’t want into your life. You are the captain of your ship and have control over who and what you want to attract to yourself.

The “Secret” Pivots on The New Age Notion of the Law of Attraction

According to the well-known book and DVD – ‘The Secret’, you can have, be, do anything you want. No matter how big it is, you can have whatever you choose. Regardless of what you want. It could be a new business, better health and happiness, more success, etc. Anything is possible if you know how to apply the secret. It is the answer to all that has been and all that will be. We all govern ourselves by the same laws regardless of where you live. It is the law of attraction. In other words, think positive, and positive things will come to you. Keep worrying and whatever it is that you are worrying about will manifest in your life.

The Power of Visualization and Attracting Success to Yourself

Your imagination plays a very powerful part in making your goals and dreams a reality. Used correctly, visualization can greatly improve your life to the point where you continuously attract prosperity and success. You can virtually attract things like possessions, love, money, people and work into your life.

It is a process very similar to daydreaming. Unlike some people might think, there is no magic involved. It is the power of your thoughts as well as natural mental laws that goes to work. For many this comes naturally without them even being aware of it. Successful people use it all the time thereby attracting success into their life. It is done through visualizing their goals as if it had already happened.

If you just stop and think for a moment – Do you realize that you are an indivisible part of the power of the universe. Your thoughts can in effect come true. Maybe not all of them, but at least the ones that are well-defined and often repeated. Eventually you create your own reality.

How a Vision Board Could Help You Apply the Law of Attraction

The law of attraction is similar to the law of gravity. It does not matter how many times you throw a ball into the air, you can be sure it will come back to you every single time. The Law of Attraction can also be referred to as the Law of Vibration. The Vision board is a great tool to help you focus on the positive things you want to attract to yourself. It will help you to counteract negative self-talk and replace it with powerful affirmations instead.

Essentially, the vision board will assist you to change your belief system where you get to break through any self-limiting barriers and reach your goals by focusing on what matters most to you on a daily basis thus helping you in making the most of the law of attraction to better your life.

 Motivation – Drive will be the key ingredient needed to carry out hypnosis on yourself . Be clear on what you plan to achieve through the session.

 Relaxation – You’ll need to ensure that there are need zero distractions and focus on achieving total relaxation of your body & mind.

 Concentration – Your full concentration and energy needs to be channeled on a single image, sound or idea – especially if you are doing self hypnosis on your own without a recording to guide you.

 Internal Focus – As an individual you should direct your concentration on conjuring up a very strong visual image of the desired result

What Are The Benefits of Self Hypnosis?

The Truth About Hypnosis

The Truth About Hypnosis

Hypnosis – What is it about?

There are so many people out there who have so many misconceptions about hypnosis, and it is really time that someone got the truth out and helped people to learn what hypnosis is really all about and why they should not be scared about self hypnosis or any other type for that matter.

The Misconceptions About Hypnosis

The reason why many people seem to have misconceptions about hypnosis is largely due to the way it has been portrayed in various forms of the media. You may have seen the much stereotyped depiction of hypnosis on television or in the movies, complete with the tall hat and the swinging watch. Stage hypnotists and some magicians add to this image by making spectators do things, apparently against their will. Even though this is far from the truth – you can be hypnotised only if you are willing at some level to go through the experience. If you are made to do something completely against your will or against your innate values, the protection mechanism in your subconscious (or unconscious) mind kicks in and you will wake up immediately.

Hypnosis – The Real Story

Hypnosis, especially hypnotherapy, is an approach that can be used in a variety of different situations. The subject or the patient’s experience can vary quite significantly depending on a number of factors – like their suggestibility, the skill of the hypnotist, how committed the subject is to the targeted change, and so on. It is important for the subjects to take the approach seriously. Or they may just be wasting their time.

Nowadays, hypnosis is used for the treatment or mitigation of a number of health conditions from cancer to dementia. It can also be used to reduce a number of physical symptoms such as pain in cancer patients. It has been used to replace anaesthesia by some dentists. It also has tremendous value in treating conditions like anxiety, panic attacks and phobias. It can also be used in tackling social issues like stage fright, social anxiety and also to improve self confidence & self esteem.

Almost everyone can be hypnotized, although there are people out there who think that they would be able to keep themselves from getting hypnotized. In fact one study shows that pre-adolescent children are in a state of waking trance 60 to 70% of the time.  This is the time when they learn the maximum from their environment and their personalities get established.

If you learn how to do self hypnosis, there are a number of benefits that you can get out of this experience.

If you choose hypnotherapy as an approach to tackling some of your problems, it is important that you approach a good hypnotherapist preferably with some experience in handling your specific problem. Though it is very unlikely that hypnosis can do you any harm, you may not get the results that you are looking for if you work with a not-so-competent hypnotherapist. Hypnosis is a powerful tool in the hands of an expert and can give you tremendous benefits and perhaps even change your whole life for the better.

Ways to Turn Around Self-Doubt

Ways to Turn Around Self-Doubt

Do you struggle with self-doubt? Perhaps you often wonder if you’ve made the right decision or have only a faint hope that your next job interview, project, or even date will turn out well. The most unfortunate thing about self-doubt is that your fears often become self-fulfilling prophecies.

On the other hand, when you take action to become more confident in yourself, more things in your life automatically turn out better as well. With more self-confidence, your decision-making skills are strengthened, others are drawn to you in social situations, you produce higher quality work, and you’re more able to create the life you desire.

Try these strategies to silence the inner critic inside of you and regain your confidence:

  1. Stop and think. Reflect on why you’re experiencing feelings of doubt. Think about the events that caused you to feel insecure. Being faced with a challenge that you don’t feel you’re capable of successfully completing is a major cause for self-doubt.
  • Do you have a habit of putting yourself down? You may be subconsciously repeating negative thoughts that prevent you from moving forward. Such thoughts as “I can’t do this” and “I’m not good enough” become reasons to opt out of new experiences that could bring you many benefits.
  • The next time you have a self-doubting thought, take a few moments to think about why you believe this is true. If insecurities are getting the better of you because of past failures, you must resolve to live in the moment. Today is a new day!
  • Replace your negative self-talk with positive thoughts about how you can do it and you are good enough. Make the switch each and every time you have a self-doubting thought. Soon you’ll automatically be singing your praises instead of your doubts.

  1. Practice self-understanding. Often, when you feel insecure about your abilities, you start berating yourself. Beating yourself up over something you feel you did wrong only leads to a cycle of frustration and procrastination. Realize that making mistakes doesn’t make you a bad or incompetent person – it simply makes you human.
  • Allow yourself to accept that while you’re not perfect, you’re certainly someone who always strives to do the very best job you can. Embrace the idea that every challenge in life is an opportunity for you to learn something new and grow as a person.
  1. Make a list. Take a blank sheet of paper and make two columns. On the left side, write down all of those doubtful thoughts you’re having about yourself right now. On the right side, list all of the positive facts that dispute your doubts.
  • For example, suppose you’ve been assigned a new task at work that you’ve never done before, and you immediately become negative because you feel your skills aren’t adequate. On the left side of the list write “I can’t do this because I don’t have the skills.” On the right side of the page write “I was given this task because I’m a quick learner who always gets the job done.”
  • You’ll find that you have a lot more positive facts listed than doubts. If your positive list is short, keep searching through your talents and good qualities (yes – they are there) until your positive list outweighs your negative one.

  1. Write a letter. Write a letter to yourself that talks about your positive traits and how you’ve overcome obstacles in the past. If you can recall a specific time when you triumphed over self-doubt and accomplished something that makes you feel proud, tell this to yourself in the form of a story.
  • The act of writing the letter will release all of those pent up insecurities that are spinning around inside of your mind. By the end of the letter, you should be feeling a lot better. Keep the letter in a brightly colored folder, so you can refer back to it when needed.

  1. Make an appreciation folder. Keep track of those kind words of appreciation you receive from others. When you’re experiencing self-doubt, it’s easy to forget about all of those wonderful comments you’ve received for doing things that made other people’s lives better in some way. Collect all of the emails, notes and cards that say kind and loving things about you.
  • When you feel the voice of your inner critic welling up inside of you, simply take out your appreciation folder and read those wonderful thoughts.

Self-doubt can rob you of the opportunity to reach new heights of success in life. While it’s very common to doubt yourself once in a while, you want to be able to easily let go of your inner critic when it pops up. Practicing the steps above will enable you to push through your self-doubt, boost your confidence, and clear the way for positive new experiences.
